Time Warner and my SS number.
The other day, we, for whatever reason, stopped getting our caller I.D. on the phone and on the TV. So we called Time-Warner and set up an appointment for them to come out and see what was wrong. Later that evening, all of a sudden, the caller I.D. showed up. So we called Time-Warner and told them that we no longer needed their help and to cancel the appointment. The guy at Time-Warner wanted the last four digits of my social security number! When asked why, he said - that's the way we do it. Well they didn't need it when they made the appointment. And he just kept saying - that's the way we do it. He said if he didn't get that number, he couldn't cancel the appointment. Makes absolutely no sense! I should have told him no way am I giving that to you and when he said he wouldn't cancel the appointment, I would have said - OK. We won't be there when they show up! Things are so complicated these days. This wouldn't have happened even 20 years ago. There are some things that were much better then. Actually, a lot of things.

i wonder what he would have matched the four digits to, since he doesn't have or shouldn't have your ss number. But with those digits, it's possible either he or TW could misuse them.
Just another example of American business busting their way into our private lives. Some a**hole in a suit decides his company would like even more of our information and makes it a required element of doing business.
I'd recommend you send a note to Consumer Fraud, but if your county is like mine, they already have a pile of complaints on TW. In fact, I was told by a worker that their largest stack of complaints are for TW.
Our only hope is competition, but in the wings to provide it is another consumer rapist, Verizon.
